ATV Channel 0 Melbourne Opener 1968

Uploaded by: aussiebeachut
Video Description:
This is an incredibly rare clip.
It shows the opener for Channel 0 (later ATV 10) Melbourne on Saturday morning October 19, 1968.
The use of a clock was common for all Australian TV stations up until the late 1970s. You can even make out the MEXICO 1968 Olympics logo above the Channel 0 logo below the clock. Back then there were no restrictions on Olympics coverage.. no exclusive rights paid for.. so all stations had access and could broadcast the Games.
It is in Black and White because Australian TV was Black and White in 1968. Colour came in 1975. Although ATV channel 0 did do some experimental transmissions in colour in 1967.
I believe the video is a kinescope.. possibly done by a Channel 0 cameraman at the time using a 16mm film Camera with sound trained on a TV monitor either at the Nunawading Studios or at TV set at Home.
The music theme is the Macarthur Park theme used by 0-10 as it's promo music in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane off and on between 1968 and 1975.
The show that follows is "UP TIGHT". a pioneering music programme that paved the way for shows like "COUNTDOWN" and "Hey Hey it's Saturday" in the 1970s.

Don't quite sure it's the same version (hard to tell with the quality) but TEN used the Hugo Montenegro version for quite some time - still available on CD. I hope to post that version soon! Love this stuff Matt.

Yeah I think this would've been filmed off a home TV set. The station would've done away with kinescopes in favour of the cleaner videotape recording process by the time UpTight and the MacArthur Park-themed idents came along. BTW - they still used the network name "Independent Television System" until 1970 when they adopted the name "0-10 Network".

elektroboy125, that song is called California My Way by an Aussie group called The Iguana.
originally released on the Festival label, but sometimes pops up on aussie compliation CDs.
kinescopes were ... ( 1 year ago by jpvp2)
kinescopes were used well into the 70's until color - much of what is left of ATV0 material only exists on kinescopes. It required a special kine machine and camera to film from a special tv screen. Just pointing a normal 16mm camera at a tv screen would result in flicker and rolling bars etc - so a special kinescope recorder was used

Thats the situation, color wasnt allowed to be transmitted even though most of the station in Aussie land could until the public broadcasting network was ready to go color, making it one of the last industralized nations to do so, the clock before opening was borrowed by Aussie stations from British (UK) network openings/teardowns.
Almost correct ... ( 7 months ago by zoltantheduck)
Almost correct tubeie07, while Funny Man was a cover of a Ray Stevens song, The Star was written by Johnny Young (he of Young Talent Time) and it was covered by Herman's Hermits.

Not quite right ... ( 5 months ago by MarkJSau)
Not quite right about colour TV in Aus scpoker. It wasn't a matter about the Australian Broadcasting Commission being ready for colour, more that the Federal Government was evaluating colour TV systems and eventually settled on PAL as the standard for Australia, which was introduced for broadcast on 1 March 1975.

Yes the Band at the end are definitely The Iguana from Melbourne. They recently reunited for a 30 year anniversary gig. The drummer, Russell MacGregor became a tenor in the Australian Opera Company after this (He is my Uncle!)
